Course Description:

This course will inform participants of strategies for infection prevention and control in dentistry as well as OSHA regulations and CDC guidelines. Environmental asepsis, instrument processing and recirculation, dental waterline maintenance, hand hygiene, selection of personal protective equipment, updates to the hazard communication standard, and hints for improving program efficiency are some of the topics that will be discussed.

 

Learning Objectives:

 

-      Discuss the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard

-      Understand the current key recommendations for CDC guidelines

-      Identify HAV, HBV, HCV, HIV, TB

-      Review the infectious disease process and standard precautions

-      Describe engineering and work practice controls

-      Examine exposure control protocols

-      Increase compliance for sterilization and biological monitoring

-      Explain disinfection and barrier technique

-      Evaluate boil water advisory and waterline (biofilm) protocols

-      Assess personal protective equipment

-      Outline hand hygiene techniques

-      Describe the Hazard Communications Standard

About the Speaker:

Ellen Gambardella, CDA, RDA, M.Ed., FADAA was selected as the "Most Effective Dental Assistant Educator in the United States" in a nationwide search. The Massachusetts Dental Society presented her with the "Special Award for Teacher of the Year" and the "Auxiliary of the Year" award. She is the recipient of the "Goldin Foundation Award for Excellence in Education" and the "Dr. LeClaire Dental Health Professional Award" for innovative and impassioned teaching. The United States Air Force recognized Ellen for her educational support of the 66th Dental Flight and Medical Group. She has been appointed by the Massachusetts Department of Education to develop Dental Assisting teacher licensing examinations. She was recently awarded the title of "Fellow" from the ADAA. A former faculty member of Tufts and Northeastern Universities, Middlesex Community College, and the Minuteman School of Applied Arts and Science, Ellen is an author and has lectured nationally and internationally.
